What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is the process of therapy during which the client is under hypnosis.

Hypnosis is a natural state of mind. It is characterised by an intensive focus on one particular idea or thought and to the exclusion of all else. For instance, whilst we might focus on relaxing the muscles of the neck, all surrounding noise is locked-out.

We naturally go through a state of hypnosis several times throughout the day. A similar state is created in the therapy session to achieve the intended objectives.

At the end of a session, we tend to feel very calm and relaxed.

How does hypnotherapy work?

When we are under hypnosis, our conscious mind is focused on a particular task, such as relaxing.

Our subconscious is then open to suggestion, as the critical defensive conscious is “switched off”.

Once the subconscious is open to suggestion, we can then re-programme previous connections and so address the reason for your visit to a hypnotherapist.

Once the re-programming has been completed, we complete the hypnosis with changes that will stay deeply rooted in the subconscious.

Are we aware of what is happening and will we remember it later?

Not only are we aware of everything that is being said during hypnotherapy, but we will also remember what was said when we come back to full awareness.

We are aware of what is said but, as the process is positive and restorative, we just feel inclined to “go with the flow”; to take it all in and relax.

If something is said that causes us discomfort or unease, we can easily and spontaneously snap out of hypnosis and come back to awareness.

We do not lose control when we are in hypnotherapy sessions. On the contrary, the objective of hypnotherapy is to give the client control over his/her feelings and behaviour.

How long are sessions and treatment program?

Sessions last for approximately 50 minutes, and the number of sessions in a treatment can vary from 1 to 15 or more, depending on various factors.

To stop smoking, it normally takes only one session lasting approximately 2 hours.
